Live Event: Bringing the Economy Home: Degrowth and Local Investing for a Sustainable Future

December 3, 2024 • 11:00am US Pacific
Little Birdhouse

Infinite growth on a finite planet: that’s the dominant (and absurd) economic strategy that has put societies all over the world on an unsustainable path headed toward collapse. We need a profound cultural and economic transformation that prioritizes wellbeing over growth, community development over global conquest, and degrowth over fantasies of continuous growth. What do we, as citizens and community members, need to know about degrowth? And what are some practical ideas for jumpstarting the needed economic transformation and bolstering a community-centered, right-sized economy?

Jason Hickel, Professor at the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Barcelona and author of Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World, will join Nia Evans (Executive Director) and Cierra Peters (Director of Communications, Culture & Enfranchisement) of the Boston Ujima Project, which is focused on organizing Greater Boston area neighbors, workers, business, owners, and investors to create a community-controlled economy. Environmental journalist Rachel Donald will host Jason, Nia, and Cierra for an expansive conversation on the what, why, and how of sustainably scaled economies.

This event is part of a series of interviews, articles, and events that Post Carbon Institute is hosting on the topic of moving beyond growth.
