Is there something in new research that gives clues as to how we can maintain happiness at a time of industrial contraction?
There’s good information out there on how to contract sustainably–some of it surprising. Everyone who’s looked at the topic finds compelling reasons to pay attention to the happiness research and use indicators other than GNP, Gross National Product, to guide policy.
We go to the inaugural conference of the new organization, Gross National Happiness USA, in Burlington, Vermont in early June.
Featured speakers and interviewees include:
Ben Bernanke, chair of the Federal Reserve
Richard Heinberg, senior fellow, Post-Carbon Institute
Tom Barefoot, vice-president, Gross National Happiness USA
Robert Costanza, director, Gund Institute for Ecological Economics
Derek Bok, professor at Harvard
Stuart Comstock-Gaye, director, Vermont Community Foundation
John deGraaf, executive director, Take Back Your Time
Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economics and Eaarth and environmental activist
