Two highlights in a long public services career: (1) Michael Mielke organized a successful national grassroots campaign for US national legislation for ecology and the environment, the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act. It still is one of, if not the largest restoration of ecological systems on Earth. (2) He wrote and led to passage Children’s Trust Fund legislations for the prevention of sexual and physical abuse of children in two states. These highlights were not individual actions, but the result of large national and state movements. Mielke raised hundreds of millions of dollars for these transformations, and a large part was from philanthropies.
